Understanding Wedding Budget Tiers
When it comes to wedding photography pricing, one size definitely doesn’t fit all. Wedding budgets can range from DIY affairs to ultra-luxury extravaganzas, and your pricing should reflect the tier you’re targeting. Let’s break down the data on what each of these tiers is typically spending on their ENTIRE wedding (these numbers include photography):
- DIY Weddings: $25,000 or less (typically $250 or less per guest)
- Budget Weddings: $25,000 – $50,000 (around $500 per guest)
- Lovely Weddings: $50,000 – $100,000 ($500 – $1,000 per guest)
- Upper-Lovely Weddings: $100,000 – $150,000 ($1,000 – $1,500 per guest)
- Entry-Level Luxury: $150,000+ ($1,500+ per guest)
- Mid-Level Luxury: $250,000+ ($2,500+ per guest)
- Upper-Level Luxury: $350,000+ ($3,500+ per guest)
- Ultra-Luxury: $450,000+ ($4,500+ per guest)
Understanding these tiers is crucial because couples in different tiers have different expectations and budgets for photography.
Factors Influencing Wedding Photography Pricing
Now that we understand the budget tiers, let’s look at what influences wedding photography pricing:
- Experience and Skill: More experienced photographers can command higher prices.
- Location: Prices vary significantly based on your geographical area.
- Time: The number of hours you’ll be shooting affects your price. Additions like an engagement session or rehearsal dinner coverage also affect this.
- Deliverables: Are you offering prints, albums, or digital files?
- Team: Will you need second shooters or assistants?
- Equipment: High-end gear can justify higher prices.
- Editing Time: Don’t forget to factor in post-production work.
- Business Expenses: Your pricing needs to cover all your costs and provide a profit.
What Should Wedding Photographers Charge?
Pricing your photography services is a two-fold process:
1. Your photography needs to cover your expenses and provide a profit.
This is the most important step. If you’ve never added up ALL your business expenses and figured out exactly how much money each wedding costs you, stop what you’re doing right now and do that first! You’re running a business, and businesses HAVE to know their numbers inside and out to be successful.

2. The pricing of your services needs to align with the budgets of your ideal client.
Before we go ANY further on this point, let us make one thing abundantly clear: you are not going to charge someone more for wedding photography simply because they are wealthy. Nope. That’s not even remotely ethical.
Higher-budget weddings typically equal higher production value. A million-dollar wedding is guaranteed to be more logistically complex than a $5,000 backyard wedding. The timeline will be stricter, there will be more things to photograph (AKA you’ll need a bigger team), you’ll likely be shooting for more hours, and the expectations of a photographer responsible for capturing all the things that million dollars bought will be MUCH higher.
So it’s no surprise that clients who are planning a luxury wedding would be a *bit* confused if you quoted $4,000 to shoot their million-dollar event. In fact, they probably wouldn’t give you the time of day because they will doubt whether or not you’re competent enough to photograph their event—even if it’s not true.
So no—don’t charge more for an event simply because the client COULD pay that. But be aware that higher-price point weddings equal more work, higher expectations, more value provided, a bigger team, and a LOT more stress.
